Can you be conscious for a grand mal seizure/tonic-clonic?

Tue, 07/07/2009 - 19:52

A few weeks ago, at the age of 22,  I was diagnosed with epilepsy. I have had mainly focal epileptic seizures but recently suffered from a second tonic-clonic seizure in a month.

I was asleep and it was late at night for the first tonic-clonic seizure and I was at the hospital for EEG testing as well as video monitering.

During the second, it was late afternoon, I had suffered from two seizures that day and then after dozing off around 5:30, awoke to my neck turning almost all the way around and my arms twitching, then my body, and then my legs. I rememeber the entire thing... gasping for air and almost losing consiousness. I am currently taking 1500 mg. of Keppra and now will be increasing this dosage to 3000 mg.

I am 22, in perfect health... and now dealing with all of this. It is my knowledge that people that have grand mal seizures or tonic-clonic seizures, lose consciousness. Am I having some sort of different seizure, or what?!?! So confused...

I'm 18 and have had seizures since I was 2 but started having tonic-clonic seizures just a couple years ago. I am not always conscious when I have them but I have been before and it is extremely scary and embarrassing. Loosing complete control of your body and just coming out of it in such extreme muscle pain and head aches.. bleh this god guy doesn't seem too fair

This happens to me.  I just

This happens to me.  I just started seeing a neurologist.  This information will help me deal with med staff when describing what's going on with me.  At least I can show them others who deal with it.  The current suspicion in my case is that I'm having pseudo-seizures AND true seizures. My minor psychiatric issue has never caused me to have seizures before, however.  I'm not at all convinced a single seizure has anything to do with that.  I'm confident it's epileptic, as flashing lights almost immediately make me feel all kinds of messed up, my seizures seem to be more frequent when I can't sleep, I usually have issues with insomnia, I have zero control when the tremmors start.  It's like I'm locked out of my body from the moment I try to move after the seizure starts.  I feel a tingling shoot from the back of my head down most of my back, my limbs go cold or get prickly, I try to move and can't, then I explode in violent jerky movements.  Sometimes I fainted during them, sometimes I don't.  Sometimes I don't faint until after.  Sometimes I blink while laughing at a YouTube video and it's suddenly 2 hours later  the video is over, I'm dizzy, nauseous, and pulling myself out of an uncomfortable position in my sleep with loads of neck pain.  Oh, and my short-term memory bit the dust within the last year, when the grand mals started. If you aren't talking to a neurologist, it's more than worth it to.
