epilepsy and "rage episodes"

Sat, 01/08/2005 - 16:37
hello,I'm wondering if anyone has any input or experience with this. My brother has epilepsy diagnosed in his early 20's. Seizures are mostly controlled by medication. However, he has episodes of extreme, nearly violent rage where he seems out of control and screams at people in a way that is pretty scary. I have always noticed that he has what we called a "bad temper" but really it was always alot more than that. Now though, these episodes are becoming more frequent. (3-4 times weekly)We are wondering if this has anything to do with his epilepsy. The episodes are so extreme that it seems not right. He screams and throws things though he has not been physically violent. If anyone has any input it would be great to hear. Does this sound at all familiar to anyone else? Thanks.

Birdwingblue-I can't believe

Birdwingblue-I can't believe what i am reading...this might as well be my boyfriend that you are talking about...He is 46 and was diagnosed at or around age 9..His seizures are controlled by daily medication...he too has been told that he has anger issues ...the anger issues that i see with him are exactly how you described...when they happen, they are rarely provoked to justify the means... intense amount of RAGE that he dishes out ... and when i say RAGE, he might as well be out of his body...the look in his eyes and face is though he is gone and has completely lost his mind...these rages have turned physical a few times and just yesterday, it happened again in a disagreement we were having (out of nowhere) !!!...I was not prepared for it as he charged me screaming and coming at me backing me up against the wall....   THIS IS ABSOLUTELY REAL AND TERRIFYING....I to would like an answer to this as i dont feel this is just HIM as a violent person....He currently takes Topamax once a day and Dilantan (4 pills) a day.....is this a long term residual effect of medications or brain damage from all the episodes when he has had a seizure in the past....i feel like I'm about to have a nervous breakdown being on the receiving end of these violent uncontrolled rages....

this is my boyfriend to a tee

this is my boyfriend to a tee....i have been dealing with this for 8 years and something has to change....the rages, the continual highs and lows... >>Knowing that he can pick and choose when he is unkind and dark is frustrating, especially when he doesn't care that we are so upset. He also Gaslights us. Every day is an extreme challenge with him.  <<this nails it....and he knows that hes doing it....
