Epilepsy and Memory

Tue, 04/05/2005 - 21:21

I have to do a paper for my Cognitive Psychology class and the topic I wanted to do was "The Effects Epilepsy Has On Memory".

My youngest sister has suffered from epilepsy since she was 6yrs old and has gotten to the point where she cannot (or will not) recall any of our childhood 'good' memories.  I was just wondering if anyone has had/or has similiar experiences or knows someone who seems to have problems with thier memory.

Would really appreciate it.

Thank you,

Michelle

Hi,I too have no memory of my childhood. I am now 45 and cannot remember any part of my life before my 20's. I know that certain events happened, especially since I have the pictures of what i did. But to actually remember I appear unable to. Everyone else in my family is able to remember alot of information that either I didn't process or am simply unable to retrieve. My Doctor believes something tramatic happened to me that blocked off that part of my memory. But I am not convinced. Just yesterday he asked me again about tramatic events in my child hood. Hello, I don't remember! So I guess i have to go see a Psychiatrist to see if something is being suppressed or if I have lost that memory chip in my brain. So Best of luck to you.DaynaOh BTW when I wrote a paper on this for my psych class...the teacher agreed that it was probably all my head injuries from falling down that may have caused my memory loss. Or the Drugs that i took when I was a teenager.LOL

Dear "Sweetlady25" - This is the second time in a week that I've had it confirmed that "people (esp.potential mates) are reluctant to get involved with anyone who has Epilepsy. I went on a date with a fellow this weekend, and amidst the conversation he acknowledged that many of his friends warned him to "beware of Christine, she has Epilepsy." Fortunately, he doesn't see what the big deal is (even though he has witnessed a seizure.) I suppose in some way I am relieved to hear that men are afraid of me because I have Epilepsy because I am: 45, blonde, blue eyed, 5'8", size 8, etc. etc. . . But, men in my area have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST IN ME! When they find out that I have Epilepsy they rarely even want to be my friend.
