Is an elevated body temp common during a seizure

Mon, 04/14/2014 - 11:29

18 year old nephew had a full blown seizure out of the blue. Never had one before. His dad said that he was burning up to touch while this was going on. He was hospitalized overnight and then discharged with the hospital saying that they would set up appointments with experts in the next little while. He did have a brain scan which showed no injury or tumors.  So right now we are in limbo but I am wondering if the elevated body temp is common with epilepsy or could this be something else? I know no one here can diagnose but we are searching for help as we wait.

Getting warm during a seizure

Getting warm during a seizure can happen because during most convulsive seizures the muscles are very active, it is basically like a strong workout. So the body temp can go up similar to if someone were exercising. Keep in mind that seizures are not necessarily the same as epilepsy. One can have a seizure, say from head trauma, and then never have one again. This would not be epilepsy. For now it sounds like your nephew had one (observed) seizure without a clear reason why. Hopefully they can figure it out. Good luck.

Those are things they can

Those are things they can look at to see if there is anything wrong with  the brain or it's groth. A EEG will be needed to see the electrical output from the brain. If it shows any abnormalities then they know where to look at closer.  I had 15-20 EEG's that were all normal. I had another that showed abnormalities (seizure activiity) on the left lobes of my brain. They did not have MRI's or CT scans back then but they did have angeograms and with the one they did they had already found nothing until they looked closer at the area that showed seizure activity. By doing that they found scared brain tissue caused by a hemmorage to the brain at the age of 6-8, The hemmorage was done by a blow to the brain, As for temps going up yes. In a convulsion your muscles are jerking with all the strength they have and you do not know how much strength you have. You have probably read or heard about someone picking up a car to get it off someone. Thats the kiind os strength I am talking about. I was in a convulsion and rather then moving the coffee table my step father tried to hold my arm down. That was the last time he tried that swince I picked him up and tossed him across my body. I weighed 85 lbs and was a weakling and he was a marine weighing 225 lbs. A seizure is basically all the muscles jerking with all their strength untill the seizure is over which is why people are tired after they have one.
