6 MONTH OLD INFANT POSSIBLY HAVING SEIZURES

Wed, 04/06/2005 - 02:13
I am in desperate need of help and/or advice. My 6 month old son has been having these "episodes" where he gets a blank stare, he stops breathing, and will not respond to anything. Afterwards, he is very out of it, and falls asleep. We have rushed him to our local Childrens hospital twice in the past couple months and doctors can't find anything wrong with him. Doctors have done a 3 day EEG, a CT Scan, and an MRI, and found nothing. Right now they are saying it could be acid reflux, but I just don't believe that's it. I have done tons of research on seizures, but still don't see a definite answer. If it's seizures then what kind are they? And from the research I've done, I can't figure out any cause of the seizures? I can't find much specific to seizures in infants. Does anyone have any information that may help me? Thank you so much!!Kelly

I am sorry that you are going through this tough time. I went through it when my baby turned 4 months old and got his immunizations and had adverse reaction. He is now 18 months old and we are struggling every day with the problem the immunization has created. My baby had very long seizures over an hour long that had to be "broken" everytime at the ER...we took an ambulance ride every week to the ER cause that is how often he would have these horrible seizures. It was extremely stressful on our family. We have now found a WONDERFUL pediactric neurologist and she has help so much in finding the "right" medication that has at least controlled the very long seizures...but we struggle everyday cause my baby still has around 40 + seizures during the day! I just want to say it might take a while till you find the correct medication for your baby but hang in there. I will keep you in my thought and prayers for your baby and my prayers for you to stay strong for your baby and family. If you would like to ask me more questions you can e-mail me directly at kwajkid@hotmail.com. If not good luck to you.

Kelly,

I'm a mother of an 11 month old boy who has seizures. We are still waiting for a diagnoses. I understand what you are feeling.

Please don't accept the diagnoses of acid reflux. You seem as if you doubt that this is his problem. We have a mothers intuition and we know when something is terribly wrong with our children. My husband and I have vowed that we will do whatever it takes to find out the cause of our sons seizures. Even if it means moving to another state. We are the voice for our tiny babies and we need to keep talking until we find somebody who will listen.  If you are insured then talk to different doctors. It couldn't hurt.

Best of luck to your family. I will pray for you.

Tina

Hi - I don't know if you've gotten your answers yet or not - still new to navigating this site. Wanted to let you know that we suspected my youngest of having siezures from around 6 months on - but he wasn't definatively diagnosed until he went status around 10 months old. The nuerologist didn't feel comfortable medicating a young little man because the EEG showed some spikes but was otherwise non-indicative. He was started on dilantin after his status episode and then switched over to tegretol, but we still don't have great control. We're working on it thought. I understand some of what you're going through. I am currently mommy to three special little boys - and they all have seizures, as does my husband. If I can answer any questions I will be happy to do so. I'm still learning a lot myself...but we all are, aren't we??? ((hugs)) Katrina
