2 yr old with seizure disorder... advice?

Mon, 08/23/2004 - 09:30

Our 2 year old son was just diagnosed with absence seizures.  He would stop playing (clue #1) and stare off into space for 3-15 seconds.  Then he would resume playing.  In one month's time this went from 1 every week to 1 every 10 minutes.  The EEG confirmed our observations.

The doctor prescribed Depakote and we got it in the "sprinkle" form.  Have you heard of this?  You open this capsule and sprinkle it on applesauce, pudding, etc.  Well, that sounds easy.  However, our son will not let us give it to him!  He wants to do it himself and then it ends up on his shirt, the floor, or wherever!  We want to make sure he gets the right dose and thought this would be better than liquid.  Any advice?

He has only been on the meds for 4 days but I want them to work immedicately!  I see no change in his symptoms and would like to know how long it will be before we see some improvement.

This is all brand new for us.  There is no history of seizures in our family.  In fact, we have 3 other healthy children!  I am so impatient and would give anything to take this condition away from my little guy.

so glad that I was able to help a little.  I so agree that I wish there was a magic drug to make it better.  Just stay positive and strong for your son.  Your example will make a world of difference in the long run in how he handles it.

How true, and examples are set by parents, kids pick up how parents see and react to things so quickly as well.Maybe one day there will be a drug that doesn't mean kids feeding the sprinkle loaded food to the dog.If research keeps moving forward at the pace it is that day might be soon.
