Seizures returning after being gone for years???

Mon, 04/18/2016 - 09:35
Hi, I am an almost 45 year old wife and mom of two sons (ages 17 and 19). I was dianosed with simple partial seizures about 15 years ago. I never lost consciousness with mine - I would just get a weird feeling inside my head, then the room would start moving and I couldn't focus on anything. I never lost consciousness and could even talk right through them - just couldn't focus my eyes. Not good when you're driving! It would last about 30 seconds. I failed two EEGs and was put on Topamax. I later switched to Zonegran. Both worked great and I never had the seizures for years. I was able to go off the meds about 6-7 years ago because I was seizure free and passed my EEGs. Fast forward to now, 6-7 years of no seizures. First day of my menstrual cycle, I got that really weird, dizzy sensation inside my head that I used to get right before the seizure, but I didn't get the actual seizure (although they say the auras are seizures too). Well, my head felt funny the rest of the day. I have been having this funny aura like feeling in my head (kind of feels lightheaded, as if something just isn't right with my vision, even though it is - can't describe it exactly). I have been having it on and off the last 4 days of my period. I am scared that the seizures are returning. My neuro moved away and there are waiting lists to see them in my area. I called my regular doctor and asked if he could get me in sooner. I don't like this feeling. So, has anyone here been seizure free for years (no meds) only to have them return? Do you think perimenopause has anything to do with it? Does anyone have these type of simple partial seizures (don't lose consciousness, can talk, just vision gets all screwy)? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I don't have the same type as

I don't have the same type as you, but I was mostly seizure free for 22 years and now I'm having breakthrough seizures on zonisamide.  When mine came back earlier this year, they seemed to be linked to my cycle just like yours.  I took depakote for my seizures when I was a kid and that left me with PCOS and hypothyroidism, so I can't take it anymore.  I'm being switched to tegretol since the zonisamide was ineffective and caused lots of side effects- low BG, low HR, depression, suicidal thoughts.  I hope we both find answers and effective treatment.

My daughter just had a grand mal seizure this week.  Has been seizure free for exactly 20 years to the day.
