Do animals help alerting people with epilepsy?

Fri, 06/30/2006 - 21:19
One day i had a Grand Mal seizure and if most people know it knocked me unconscience...well my aunt said that Lucy (The dog) alerted her, but i was never sure because maybe the dog actually had to go to the bathroom and if they actually made dogs like that like for people who are blind...i was curious because i was wondering if they do, because if i get older if i should get a dog that help people with my condition please let me know!

I was given a rescued puppy

I was given a rescued puppy when she was 5 weeks old and raised her alone during a time when I wasn't taking very good care of myself and having quite a few sz's. The dog saved my life in an emotional way, and gave me a reason to live, but I lost her in December of 2004. I could tell you several tales of waking up to her keeping me on the sofa safely during both complex partials and grand mals, or pinning me in a corner away from dangerous household items. One day about 13 years ago, she ran downstairs in my apartment making all sorts of noise while my roomies were on thier computer playing a video game. When they got to my room the dog was showing them that I was having a bad grand mal and had the telephone chord wrapped around my neck. I loved that dog more than some of my family members, and miss her dearly, especially having to make the final descision myself, that was heart breaking. Also, the dog was never actually trained for this purpose. If you believe as my Mom does, that everything happens for a reason, I was meant to rescue her, and she was meant to rescue me. I still talk about her here, and post pics and poems for her all the time. Susan P.S. I just realized I already answered this post and feel like an idiot. I had 4 major sz's a few weeks ago and my brain hasn't worked the same since. I tried to put different info on here so I don't feel so dumb. Smiles

Hi Susan: That is quite a story about your dog. Are you going to get another one? I have a little tiny poodle that is my biggest comfort. She goes with me everywhere. I can even tuck her inside my jacket and go snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, horseback riding, etc. She seems to really stick to me when I'm feeling bad. Her name is Silky. I've enjoyed reading your letters and learning more about you. I knew you had had that bad day Sept. 27, the 4th day on your new job, but this other letter you wrote tells more about that job and your experiences, which filled me in a little. Did you say you live in Florida? I live in Washington and just found this site last week, but have written to you before. My main problem is losing my memory even after seizures are over. Want to find people who have this problem too. Blessings, & Hugs. Terri N.
