Epilepsy and marijuana

Sat, 02/05/2005 - 12:32
Hi all, I was wondering whether or not the effects of pot on the brain can intefere with the effects of the epilepsy medicine Tegretol 400mg per day. I know grapefruit and alcohol have adverse effects on the drug's treatments and can lead to uncontrollabe seizure possibilities in some cases. However, in the case of weed I do not not if it does have any interference or not. So if anyone could help me here I would appreciate it. Thanks.Chris

I actually stopped "lurking" and registered to respond to a mom on this discussion board concerned about the psychotropic ("high") effects of mmj while needing to take care of her kids and her life and still hoping for a reasonable quality of life. But now I can't find her post! So wherever you are.... I am a mom of two, with a demanding job, disabled by Multiple Sclerosis, in pain much of the time, and now recently diagnosed with Epilepsy. I have  been using mmj (I live in AZ, so have a card and am totally legal) for the MS symptoms and it has helped more than all of the expensive, difficult-to-tolerate, and branded drugs I take for MS (although I still do take most of them- I've been able to cut way down on opiod pain meds). My mmj is clean, developed by established growers for medical use, and I have a variety of different preparations and types depending on what sx I want to treat at the time. I reserve smoking for nights after my children are asleep because that has the most psychotropic effects on me. I have built great tolerance over time so I can take the sublingual drops throughout the day to control sx without any noticeable head effects, and am working on building my tolerance to a more intense and pure form of cannibus (the CBCs, not the THC- which is the primary therapeutic ingredient) oil without the head effects. I am so grateful I can now get medical quality cannibis and can run my own trials to find out what works and how to build up tolerance so that I am never inebriated. It's a great addition to my 'toolbox', and I expect that will be true for epilepsy too as I figure thsi part out. Being a mom who is present and involved is the most important thing to me; but I can't do that when I am constantly taking to my bed with pain or seizure activity. MMJ has really improved the quality of my life and mothering.

Unfortunately, the country I am at (burned and raised in Costa Rica) is completely closed to the idea of Legal & medical marihuana. I can say though that I have smoked marihuana for a while and helps A LOT to my mood, stress levels (that really affects my symptoms), auras etc. I take 2 different types of drugs for the epilepsy and these two "powerful great" drugs haven't controlled my seizures at all... I can also say that combined with alcohol, don't do any good to you. You probably hate lossing control of your body as much as I do... If this "rasta" ilegal drug, helps; why wouldn't you give it a shot? I'd probably rather do this for a lifetime than destroy my liver with these stupid meds. Bottom line; use it as a recreational medical drug, follow your doctor's recommendations, enjoy a stress-free type of live and this recipe will definitely get your life under control again.
