Driving: Does your doctor tell you if they report your seizures to take your licence?

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 19:50

Hi,

I don't have a drivers licence. I am wondering if the doctor reported me anyway? They ask if I have a licence and when I say no, it's always 'ohhh'.

The reason I am asking is because I don't want to have a record BEFORE I even get a licence!

Will the doctor TELL you if they reported you? Or do they just quietly report you? Will they report you if you don't even have a licence?

Thanks!

Does your doctor tell you if they report your seizures

Snowwoman,

My epileptologist's nurse told me that they don't report every seizure.   We live in CA, one of the 6 states that require doctors to report the seizures to the Dept. of Public Health, which turns it over to the DMV.  There is a possibility that your doctor assumed you were already driving.  I would contact him and chew him out.  Not that it would you help much, since the DMV has this info, but he might stop reporting your seizures.  Also, it might help other patients he "assumes" already are driving.

Seizure following a craniotomy...

Sorry, I am new to all of this. My wife had a tumor removed from her brain this week. During post-op recovery she had a short (15 seconds) seizure. The doc said it was caused by post-op swelling on the brain. She has been on anti-swelling meds and seizure meds this week. The doc doesn't think any more seizures will follow. Before being discharged from the hospital, we were told that where we live, anyone who has a seizure is not allowed to drive for 1 year.(as if the craniotomy and subsequent seizure weren't enough bad news). I know this is an epilepsy seizure conversation, but it is very hard to find any info on the topic of seizures and driving. Can anyone shed light on this topic for me? We live in Alabama.

The department of D.O.L sent me a form to have the doctor to fill out. I have had epelipsey for over 30 years but I have been seizure free for 14 years. The doctor said I have dementia but I have epelipsey. The doctor is going to take my drivers license away in a week I will lose it for 6 months. This is unfare she is a medical doctor not a neurologist. How do I keep from losig my license
