Pregnancy with valporic acid

Hi everyone. I am a 28 year old female.I have been married for about 2 years now and I have been on epival( sodium evaporate) and lamictal since I was 18. I never had a seizure during these 10 years. But then I wanted to get pregnant and according to studies valporic acid can cause abnormalities in babies. So my doctor tried to taper off this medicine and replace it with keppra. However that combination did not suit me and I started having seizures again. Eventually my situation was so bad that my doctor had to switch me back to valporic acid. I need to know if any one of you has ever had a baby while you were on valporate . If yes, was it normal ? What should I do ? I really want a baby. What options do I have ?

I am in the same boat at the moment.  I am 27 and had been on Epilim (Sodium Valproate), Lamictal (Lamatrogine) and Tegretol (Carbamazepine) since I was diagnosed at 16.  My husband and I want to start trying for children and I was told by neurologist that Sodium Valproate was a particularly bad medication in terms of pregnancy.  We chose to up my Lamictal dose and then wean me off the Epilim.  After a small setback, after which I upped my Lamical dosage again, I have now been off of Epilim for almost 3 weeks and am going well (fingers crossed) soon I will start to wean off of the Tegretol as my neurologist recommended I only be on 1 AED.  Like just_joe said, there are many differed AEDs and you just need to find the right one for you.  Good luck, I hope everything works out for you.
