Hello, I'm Kristen. I too, had my first seizure (gran mal) at 3 yrs old. While growing up, I used to have these "funny feelings" which I was later able to describe as deja vu. I had these until I was about 13 yrs old. At the age of 16, I got pregnant and a couple months after finding out, I had the aura I had when I was younger which evolved into my second gran mal seizure. After a long series of tests, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. The doctor said I had epilepsy all my life and those "funny feelings" were petit mal seizures. The gran mal I experienced was triggered by my hormones of the pregnancy. I was put on medication (Tegretol) and only had gran mal seizures about once maybe twice a year. I was well controlled until I was 24 when I became pregnant again and my gran mal seizures became more frequent to about 6 seizures a year. Again, medication was increased and added and my life was becoming strained. I got pregnant again five years later and again my seizures became more frequent to at least one a month. My doctor experimented with several medications in an effort to get them under control. I decided to have no more children since my seizures were triggered by my period, my ovulation, and with each pregnancy, the seizures got worse in intensity and frequency. Four years later I became pregnant again. I was three months pregnant and felt a seizure coming on and told my husband. When I woke up from the seizure it was weeks later. My seizure I had went into a third, fourth, fifth, etc and ended up in a coma. After my son was born, my seizures became so bad my doctor told me that after trying more than 15 medications, my only hope for control was brain surgery. I began testing to see if I was a candidate. The week before my surgery I was experiencing 25-30 gran mal seizures a week.  In March of 2006, I had a right temporal lobectomy which has saved my life. I'm still on medicine but I have my life back again. I still worry about seizures but they are not gran mal anymore. If you ever need someone to talk to, just to vent, I would be happy to listen. I know this disease can be wicked and take a toll on a person's mental stability, self-esteem, etc. I have felt every kind of feeling you can imagine. Feel free to email me if you'd like.
