Starting Colleg

I am going to college in the Fall and I'm really nervous to go having epilepsy becasue if I have a seziure none of my roommates will know what to do. I know my mom doesn't want me going to school in the fall but I already don't feel like I can be a normal teenager with this that I want to go away to school I'm just really nervous that I'll have a seziure there. Is anyone else going through this or has anyone gone through this?

Hi Kiki

The advise i can give you is to educate them (your roommates) on what to do and what NOT to do, what medication to give you, what medication you take and how epilepsy efects your day to day life. and do this without your parents present preferably they keep on interfering and they not going to be there when the $h!t hits the fan.

Like everyone else has said, just let your roommates, RAs, professors and whomever else know what's going on. From my experience people have always been really cool about it. This past semester I had a Tonic Clonic right before a hard final and ended up taking it anyway. I got a C on it (needless to say I was out of it), but after explaining what happened I was able to retake it no problem.

Hi,

I got diagnosed with epilepsy a year ago, second semester of college and it can be very frustrating and embarassing. Get involved with the disability department with your college, they will be extremely helpful. Inform your roommates of your condition and what to do in case of emergency. Find a support group, maybe there will be other people who are your age or have gone through what you will go through so you can talk about it.

All of my teachers were very understanding and while some of the other students thought I was a freak and gave me dirty looks, most of everyone I've met is very supportive.

Good luck in school :)
