Reading Music / Playing Piano / Surgery

Sat, 02/12/2011 - 20:17
Is there anyone who has had surgery (temporal lobe surgery) who can speak to effects on ability to read music / play an instrument? I am terribly afraid of losing my ability to read music comfortably, and we were unable to assess the skill specifically in the WADA test. Can anyone speak to this issue?

I had a right temporolobectomy about 3 years ago and can still read music and am coordinated enough to still play piano and the clarinet.  I believe that knowledge is more of a long term memory problem which shouldn't be affected by tweeking the temporal lobe.  Good Luck!!

Wikipedia has some articles on Music and the Brain and Neuroanatomy of Memory.

My son had 90% of his right temporal lobe removed that included a tumor (ganglioglioma) along with parts of the the amygdala, hippocampus and uncus.  He was also haveing complex partial seizures due to the tumor. This was 3 years ago when he was 10 and taking piano lessons.  Now, 3 years post surgery and med free for the last 14 months (no seizures) he plays baratone and reads music beautifully...better than ever.  I am also aware of a young man whose musical abilities improved after his brain surgery, though I am not certain it was temporal lobe.

Good Luck
