Should I look into whether my sister has epilepsy?

Sun, 08/31/2014 - 15:31

Hello,

My sister is 13 and every now and again she complains about having "De Ja Vu" feelings. Personally, I always thought she was just being weird; after reading an article about Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, however, I began to question whether it was more.

I didn't want to worry her, but I managed to ask whether she's noticed any other symptoms and she said that she feels confused and a little lightheaded. I can't say if anything else happens, as I have unfortuately never paid enough attention.

So, I was wondering whether I should tell her my worries or am I just being paranoid? I am also worried that if I bring it up with our mum, she will just brush it off.

Advice?

For many the Deja Vu is a warning of a larger seizure happening. It is esentually a seizure itself. There are many different types of seizures and th deja vu is only one of the 40+ different seizures there are. Being confused and lightheaded is another form of seizure. You might want to do some research since this site has a lot of information about types of epilepsy and types of seizures. Question your sis and let her see some of the information. Also understand that letting your Mum know with information from this site might help her look differently.  Epilepsy is more common than Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and strokes combined? Yet, little is said or writen about it, as many endure those symptoms in secret for fear of stigma. That stigme has been aropund for well ofer 1000 years

I have a similar problem with my friend. She told me has migraines, then blacks out. She says that when she has migraines, her fiance tells her she says weird things that she has no recollection of later. She also gets a lot of headaches and experiences deja vu; she is also prone to panic attacks and a lot of stress. I am really concerned because this is EXACTLY what happened with me before this happened in front of my family; luckily I had a seizure right there and was taken to the hospital; that's how I found out about my epilepsy. I've told her several times to go to the doctor (explaining my condition and what happened to me) and she brushes it off. My issues are that she lives nowhere near me and that I don't really know her family, so I can't really talk to them. Her fiance would listen to me, but he doesn't have Facebook and I don't have his number. What can I do to convince her? Please help me; she is one of my best friends and I am very worried for her.
