Riding the school bus

Tue, 08/01/2006 - 08:14
Hi, my 8 yo daughter was just diagnosed last week with complex partial seizures. I am in the process of learning all that I can, since school starts on Monday. I am trying to set up a meeting with her teacher and the school nurse, prior to Monday on how to handle seizures and what to do incase of an emergency, etc. What are some things that I need to consider or discuss in this first meeting? And what about riding the school bus? I haven't been able to find much out about bus procedures. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,I had to talk with my daughters school just last year, and will have to again this year also, you can get some info from your neuro on handling seizures and such. My neuro gave me a sheet to give to her teacher and the school nurse. Luckily, our bus drivers already knew about seizures so they know what to do. Please feel free to contact me. Hi...I also have an 8-year daughter with complex partial. The school has been wonderful...I can tell you that EVERYONE is aware of Michele's seizures....she has had quite a few in school. The administration has made special arrangements...Michele is always in a classroom with an aide (not necessarily just for her)...the aide is always equipped with a walkie-talkie so that if Michele does have an episode they call it down to the nurse right away and she comes running. She or the school secretary calls me right away to let me know...if I were not available and the seizure lasted 5 minutes or they felt they needed to , they would call 911. I also provide the nurse with Diastat in case the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes (never has since her surgery!). She ALWAYS has someone with her...she doesn't walk anywhere by herself...also during recess if it is too warm, they will keep her in the shade or stay indoors...she doesn't do well in the heat. My daughter does not take the bus...to be honest I would be nervous about that...I would check with your school to see what arrangements/precautions can be helpful. I hope this helps you...if you have any questions or would like to chat let me know!! Joan
