Nocturnal Screaming Siezures

Tue, 02/06/2007 - 22:20
Hi, I'm 34 years old and have been screaming in my sleep since I was aware of it personally around 16 y/o. It's gotten worse over the years as I find myself waken up by them screaming like something off of a scary movie then being half awake and half asleep, I'm like fighting to wake myself up. Once my body comes to, my throat hurts, and my gut feels like it's up in my chest. It only happens in my sleep, but since I've been married, it has made my spouse neurotic in his sleep. I feel for him. I was in denial for years. Actually up to four years ago about my screaming being siezures. I always went back to sleep and thought they were some sort of panic attack in my sleep, but I would never have a nightmare, or remember what happened. I started going to phscy doctors for years and they treated me for panic disorder. None of the medicine made the symptoms go away at night, and believe it or not, not one doctor questioned whether or not I have having nocturnal siezures. It amazes me how uneducated in healthcare workers on the various types of siezures there are. I knew something was different when I had a phsy dr put me on clonopam and then the screaming episodes were cut in half. Then I asked my doctor to appease me and run an MRI on my brain. It came back that I had a small tempral/parietal lesion on the left side of my brain. I just can't believe I spent 1/2 of my living years being undiagnosed and in denial because of my lack of understanding of siezures. I am even a healthcare worker. Most healthcare workers only know of Grand Mal and Petite Mal Siezures. When I went to have my back surgery, I had my doctor pre-order my ativan, because I knew the stress on my body was going to cause me to have a screaming spell. Sure enough, I did, and I had to explain the whole situation again to my nurses and remind them to look at the original upfront orders. Healthcare workers and EMS personnel really need to be more educated on Epilepsy. I actually had a rare one during the day and when EMS arrived, he outright told me that I did not have a siezure because I was able to talk to him. Man, maybe I could lobby in some way to promote first responders and nurses on the signs of other siezures than you "two" main ones. The screaming one I had at the hospital, I had no idea that I had one, but just found five nurses standing over me asking me if I was ok and did I have a nightmare. I take the time to explain everything upfront, but no one listens. I think I'm going to have to purchase one of those armbands, but I doubt anyone would read it. Sorry for the sarcasm, just frustrated with peoples lack of understanding with this disorder. Thanks for listening.

Hello, Did they ever find out

Hello, Did they ever find out what was the cause of this or how to treat it? I have exactly the same symptoms!!  I do scream at night and they are treating it as epilepsy, but no medicine has been able to control it so far. (I also suffer from herniated disk on my spine, so I feel very surprised to see someone who I can relate so much with.) The only slight difference is that I haven't had them for years, These episodes started to happen after I went on a Keto diet, even though my neurologist believes this isn't related to it (but I hadn't seized in over a year previous to this; I stopped the diet after only 2 weeks, now months have gone by and I still scream at night every other day.I am trying to look for any information or suggestion to any specialist who might help control this, as my fiance rarely sleeps well, just worried about my nocturnal screaming seizures. Sometimes I wake up with a headache (similar to the ones I have after Gran Mal seizures) but other times I just wake up normal. I will be more than grateful for any information you could share related to this!Kind regards.

I can understand your

I can understand your frustration. There are still different types of epilepsy still not understood or known that much about. Nocturnal is one of them. It doesn't go by a set pattern so is hard to detect and be agreed upon by doctors. Another possibility to consider are Night Terrors , also known as sleep terrors. Night Terrors are more commonly found in children but adults have them as well. One of the causes of night terrors can be medications that affect the central nervous system (the brain). Another good article to read is one on Sleep and Epilepsy that touches on different areas of seizure types while sleeping. I agree with you that doctors and nurses need to be more up to par on seizures and epilepsy. I'm sure there are those that are - but there needs to be more. At least be more willing to listen to the one that has it. There's nothing wrong with learning from each other, after all. There is also a type of Simple Partial that is a screaming seizure. I'll try to locate that one again and post it on here for you. Take care! -Spiz
