New here- 4 year old son diagnosed with epilepsy

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and I have a 4 year old who is newly diagnosed with epilepsy. He has severe development delays. It all started when he was 18 months old we noticed he was not developing language. Then we did the speech therapy occupational therapy etc. he was not making much progress at all. He is an affectionate child and loves to be around his family. However language skills and play skills were way behind. I often noticed that he stared off into space. Pediatrician never told me about seizures instead she said he could be in autism spectrum. When we insisted we see a neurologist we were referred one. The eeg was abnormal. He put on ethisuximide and it didn't do anything. Now we are doing more tests. Apparently he is not having absence seizures at all. He has generalized seizures. He hasn't  had tonic clonic yet. But he has lot of frequent seizures in sleep is what it seems. The doctor suggested it may be early infantile epileptic encephalopathy or dravertsyndrome. We are doing genetic tests to further treat him. I'm so over whelmed and scared. He has no words. He communicates through actions. He loves to play with us. He plays like one year old - peek a boo, songs , chase with his brother. But he doesn't seem to have good memory or learning. Neurologist ruled out autism. I'm worried if it is a severe epilepsy that is hard to treat. Is anyone has any experience on such a case as my son? Love to hear from you and find some support!!
