My third seizure this year...

Mon, 06/22/2015 - 23:14

Hi everyone,

My name is Amy and I'm really glad this site has forums because I need to talk about this to someone can understand how I feel.  I started having grand mal seizures last fall and I've had 5 so far, the most recent happened today.

I have no family history of epilepsy, I'm not sick with any other disease that would cause seizures, I'm not injured in any way.  All the tests- EEG, EKG, CAT, and tons of blood tests are all normal.

And I am really annoyed and apprehensive and I wish I knew (1) what is causing this (2) why it is suddenly happening now when I'm in my 40's and most importantly (3) how to make them stop!

Anyhow, that's my rant for today - thanks for 'listening' - comments are welcome!

Amy

(1) what is causing this ____ What causes a seizure is an electrical impulse going off wrong in the brain causing a chain reaction.  That is the simplest wat to tell what a seizure is and the cause is the start, The EEG is a test showing the electrical activity comming from the brain. A person can have them all come back normal. But understand they have more EEG's then the normal 45 minutes one. I had 20-25 different EEG's and all of them came back normal. The EKG is a test showing the electrical output from your heart, So the EKG would not be looked at for a cause. A CAT showns certain things so it too might not show what the brain is like from all angles. That test would be an MRI. With that they can see anything wrong in the brain. Like a deformed cell, scar tissue or anything else that is not normally in the brain. I know my epilepsy is caused by scar tissue which was caused by a hemmorage to the brai. That hemmorage was caused by a blow to my head which might have knocked me out for a few seconds to longer periods of time. (2) why it is suddenly happening now when I'm in my 40's. Anybody at anytime can have epilepsy.  (3) how to make them stop!   Medications can and are bring used my many people with epilepsy to control their seizures.  The only way you will know is by seeing a neurologist who specializes in epilepsy. That neurologist will listen to you and hear your issues. The tests he will use are the EEG and a MRI. If the EEG comes back normal then he may want a sleep deprived EEG which will show more electrical activity. II was tested for a week and teh EEG's and all other tests came back normal. The last test was another EEG in which I fell asleep in. That EEG had abnormalities and they knew where they came from. by looking closer at teh test that was teh MRI of the 1960's the found that scar tissue I posted above. I hope this helps and you get the assistance you need Joe
