First let me just state that we have an appointment with my sons neuro tomorrow but I am brainstorming tonight of course. Background....three months ago my healthy 9year old son suddenly went blind, followed by a grand mal seizure with the stiff limbs, eyes rolled back, biting his tongue, etc.. Went by ambulance and we were I. The hospital for four days while they got him stable in keppra. Followed up with neuro, keppra made him too angry and agitated. Switched to Topomax. This made him severely depressed. Switch to depakote. Again, severe depression and lethargy. Doc said to come off all and see if he has any more episodes or signs of seizures. We go almost two months with nothing but occasional headache and leg pains. Tonight, complained of headache and leg pain. Complete blindness followed. Headed to ER. Full blindness lasted a total of two hours. Small spot of vision came back first in right eye and then a center spot in left eye. Gave him keppra IV, sent us home. Finally regained full vision when we got home, so four hours total of either full or partial vision loss. I am freaked out to say the least. Seizures don't scare me. I know that they will stop most likely but this blindness thing is scaring the holy crap out of me. What if next time his vision doesn't come back at all?? I know he will be going back on the keppra and hopefully if he stays on it for a longer period his body will adjust and he won't be so angry eventually. Anyone else deal with or know about such prolonged vision episodes. What is this called? What do we have to look forward to?

Amy Jo listed a seizure that he might have had. Along with medications designed to treat those seizuresor partial seizures. Which is good to know. I also know that once the medication is approved for use the testing doesn't stop and the medication is testes to see which other types of seizures they will control. which medications they can be coupled with to help control a persons seizures.Generally a neurologist prescribes a medication they know works for a patient they have with the same type of seizures and he knows the dosages their patient is taking. A person can have a reaction to a medication given to them because of the medication or the dosage. I know. I was prescribes 2 medications when I had my grand mal seizure. I had a reaction to one of them and we sropped taking it. A week later I was put back on it (maybe a lower dosage) and I had no problems with it for 35 years. It takes about 4 weeks for the body to get used to a medicatin and in that time period side effects generally go away. Take the meds as prescribed. If 2 times a day they should be 12 hours apart. By doing that the therapeutic levels stay set and there is little chance of a break thriugh seu=izure happening. SO ask the neurologist WHEN the meds should be taken. Morning and night fine but at the sam time morning and night?Always ask questions. The way I have gotten my seizures under control was by asking questions and always answering the neurologists questions. I hope this helpsJoe
