Just diagnosed - scared to death, please help!

Mon, 01/29/2007 - 10:57
Hi everyone! I have been having seizures for less than a month now and I was hurried to get an EEG, which I did. I then was sent to see a neurologist who diagnosed me last Thursday with Epilepsy. Now I am scared to death due to the fact that I am 11 weeks pregnant with my first child and I am nervous as to what my seizures and medication are doing to my baby! I am taking Trileptal 300mg 3x a day. Is there anyone else out there who has experienced Epilepsy with pregnancy? Were there any bad outcomes from it? I would like to hear the good and the bad please. No sugar coating here... Thanks for your help! Feel free to contact me here or in my email. I need all the support I can get right now.

LilySue, I've had 3 babies. I took Tegretol and something else (don't remember) for the first, and I took Neurontin (tons of it) and Lamictal for the last two. Everything was fine with myself and all three babies. I took meds for partial complex seizures. Went through a bit of postpartum after the first for about a month, but my mom-in-law stayed with me during the day and all was well. Think that was due to hormonal changes afterward and the fact that the partials occurred in my RTL. Don't worry, everything will be fine. Pharmacies are required to put the worst possible side effects on the side of their bottles and doctors will always tell you the worst scenarios, no matter how small the chances are of those things happening, because they don't want to be sued. Everything's going to be great!

Carrie, thank you so much for responding so quickly! Your post definitely made me breathe a sigh of relief! I am still having seizures with my meds, they are still trying to get the right dosage for me so I'm still quite worried about the effects of the seizures on the baby. Hopefully I can find out more about that in time. Anyway, thanks again for the response! Hope to talk to you again soon!

I still had them while pregnant, too. Forgot to mention I nursed my last two babies while taking meds. What kind of seizure are you having?
