Is it a seizure?

Sat, 03/25/2006 - 22:41
Hi, I'm new here. I have been doing some research online, but maybe the best thing is to ask other people about seizures directly. I have been going to the doctor for dizzy spells for years, and have been diagnosed as boarderline hypoglycemic, but I have some other problems too. When I feel dizzy, I also feel very distant, and sometimes I have uncontrollable, sometimes violent spasms in my arms, or my whole body. Other times I will wake up in the middle of the night with tremors. Other times I will just space out. I am always fully conscious, but my body doesn't want to obey, I can't talk, my face feels numb, and I feel like I am trapped inside a bubble. I thought I was just crazy, but then I found out that a person can have a seizure and still be conscious. Still, I haven't read anything that exactly matches up to what I am experiencing. Can anyone tell me if these could be seizures anyway? If so, I don't know what could have caused it. I suffered a head trauma as a child, but most of this has only been going on since I have been an adult. To anyone who responds, thanks in advance.

While it is unwise to find a diagnosis online, it is also unwise for us to diagnose you. That said, the symptoms you described sound exactly like most of my seizures. Your next step would be to call your doctor and request an Electroencephalogram (EEG) to be done by a neurologist. This test will show if you have epileptiform wave patterns in your brain, then it can be adequately diagnosed. Not everyone has conclusive results, but it confirmed that my seizures were in fact epileptic. Hope this helps! Also, be prepared, if this is your diagnosis by a neurologist, to change your life dramatically. Good Luck!

You need to see a neurologist to be diagnosis with a seizure disorder. I was diagnosis on 3/6/06 with a seizure disorder and I had a normal EEG. my doctor said people that have seizures can still have a normal EEG. He was able to diagnosis me because of my mife and kids telling him what I be doing when I have the seizure and I was able to tell him what I be doing also. On my first visit he started me on meds it is Trileptal 300mg twice a day. i have my seizure when i lay down or trying to go to sleep or even during the day when I'm trying to take a nap or I have Aura's also.

Thank for the replies. I'm not just taking what I learn online at face value, of course. Like you all said, I would need a neurologist's diagnosis, but it is actually more "comforting" to know that it might be something that can be diagnosed, and not just a mysterious thing that I have that nobody else does.
