Hi There, I am 32 years old. Have been back on seizure meds since age 16 (diagnosed at age 5, controlled then a virus put me back on meds at age 16). I can relate to your daughter a little. I do have a heavy monthly cycle. Thing is, my period also causes my seizures. There's a bit of a reason for my period to be a bit heavy though. To be safe one method of birth control I opted to use since I am common-law (basically married, have been living with the same guy for 5+ years, in Canada that's married)....anyways, I have a non-hormonal IUD. My reason for that is most seizure meds decrease the effectiveness of the birth control pill, so I didn't think that would be safe. My cycle did become heavier, and seizure frequency did increase. For awhile I did try taking the pill just as a way to help control my period & lighten things up. It did work for me in terms of lightening up my period, but my seizure frequency remained about the same so my neuro changed my seizure meds back in June & what he added in (Keppra) didn't mix well with everything else & I felt really edgy all the time so it was decided that taking away the pill (Minestrin) would be the best thing to do first. Have you thought of putting your daughter on the pill? Tri-Cyclin worked well for me, so did Minovral. Everyone is different though. I do also find the more I exercise, the better off I am that week. Also, eatting more foods with Omega 3 & Folic Acid instead of junk food really, really helps. I hope this helps you out a lot. Any questions feel free to ask ~ EC

My daughter is the one who has the problem but does not have epilepsy. EC is right, keep away from the junk foods. My daughter has to keep away from sugars and eat well, especially a few days before her cycle. My daughter also takes Vit C because of too much loss of blood. For me for my seizures, I take magnesium and calcium/Vit d a few days before my cycle too. Will help to keep the seizures away if they are caused by her cycle.
