Epilepsy confused for Heart Condition?

Fri, 01/19/2007 - 15:11
Hello. I am new to this site and wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation. I have had migraines for years. I began going to my current neruologist because I thought I had a mini-stroke. I felt numbness and I could hear but not respond. I just stare and cannot move. I have been told that my right hand shakes during these "episodes". These have gradually gotten worse and I now can feel it coming on. Sometimes it is proceeded by a sharp pain in the back of my head. I had one normal and two abnormal EEGs (the sleep deprived was abnormal). The doctor told me that I had "spikes" in all areas of my brain at the same exact time. He told me they were not migraines and it was not a stroke. I then wore an Abulatory EEG for a week. This came back normal. However, he says that during my EEG I my heart beat was irregular (start-stop-start-stop). Now he wants me to go to a Cardiologist. He says that he is not ruling out Epilepsy, but that my symptoms may be caused by a heart condition. Has anyone had this happen to them or someone they know? I am so confused. He says I can't drive and I am not working because I am afraid to have a "spell" in front of my students (I teach third grade). I just want to know what I am dealing with. I appreciate any advice.

Hi Adamsmom, yes I have had the heart related/stroke-like episodes you describe...only it hits my left side.so anyone watching ...they will swear I am having a heart attack or a stroke...not a seizure at the time...argh! Anyway...I got the event recorder to see what was causing the trouble...if it is cardiac or seizure...Electrophysiologist...agrees with me that it was seizure related...not heart...we will see what the machine says next month. my cardiac stress test about turned the nurses hair white with the start stop, start stop....start,yeah but hey what can ya do? It is best that you not drive. I haven't for a while...I miss it...Lord knows I do...but, It is not worth the loss of an innocent life.

Hi everyone, Heart problems can be a cause of seizures in some people. It's important to check out as the treatment may be different. For example if fixing the heart problem, helps, it may get rid of the seizures! Sometimes people need seizure medicine too, thus working with both the neurologist and cardiologist is important. On the professional side of this site is pretty detailed info on cardiac issues and seizures. Probably more than you want to know but may be worth checking out.

Dayna's point on driving is well-put.. shouldn't be driving regardless of cause until the symptoms are controlled.
