absence seizures

Mon, 10/02/2006 - 15:07
Hi, my daughter was diagnosed with childhood absence seizures last week. This week we will start Zarontin twice a day and I am scared to death of what the effects of this medicine will be. I've searched the internet a million times each day looking for information on this type of epilepsy. The doctor says that for my daughter there is a 94% chance that she will outgrow it but I really don't want to live with that in my head just in case she doesn't outgrow it. I don't want her to feel responsible for having something that she has no control over. I would love to know if anyone has any experience with this type of epilepsy and the medicine that I mentioned. Thanks in advance for any help. I am also curious to know if there is anyone here who had typical absence seizures only and later it turned into another type of seizure.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I have never taken Zarontin, so I can't help you on that. I did ,however, have absence seizures as a child. I was never diagnosed until after I had my 1st daughter at 20. I did know that I felt funny when I was little and was having them but I never told anybody because I didn't really know what to say. I have simple partials, complex partials, and tonic clonics now. But one of my dotors has mentioned that my complications with labor with my 1st child could have made me start having them worse. I hope all goes well for her. We are all here to listen and help if we can.

My son was put on zarontin when he was 4 1/2 for absence seizures. It immediately stopped the eye flickering/eyes rolling up in his head and stopping in his tracks. He had no side effects with this medicine. At 6 1/2 he started having simple and complex partial seizures and is now on zonegran. Has lost his appetite on this. Wish I knew what the future held.
