18 year old son

Sat, 05/31/2014 - 10:37

Hi everyone! My 18 year old son experienced his first seizure 8 weeks ago. Saw a neurologist and had an MRI and EEG. One week ago he experienced another seizure right before his appointment to see what the test results were. His MRI was negative, thank The Lord! His EEG showed slight abnormality in the left temporal lobe affecting, according to neuro, only a few cells. Neuro said this is something that could have been present since birth. My son has always been a perfect picture of health. I would love some helpful insight from others. He is taking Keppra as his treatment. I am an over worried mother and just wonder why, after 18 years this is showing up now.

There is some thought that

There is some thought that everyone has a seizure threshold. I just think of my daughter having a lower threshold (and her issues are focal and the only EEG IEDs were in the right temporal area). Triggers for my daughter are lack of sleep, illness, stress, and so forth - and by stress that is good and bad stress, just going to a birthday party that she has fun at is something that I associate with simple partials and being told she'd go to some school party probably caused her last complex partial (happened shortly after).  Other people have noted that hormonal changes, dietary factors (celiac issues, food additives, alcohol consumption, various drugs, etc...) and so many other things can be associated with seizures.  Some things you can change (we make sure there is enough sleep, try to avoid illness) but other factors are harder to change.  So everyone is very different, it can take a while to learn what matters for a person.  Hopefully the AEDs will control things well, but he'll still need to take good care of himself.  Have you read the seizure information on this site?  Is he interested in learning about this?

His EEG showed slight

He is on the best seizure medication I have ever used in the 50+ years I have been living and dealing with epilepsy. It has reduced the number of seizures I was having. It shortened the time in those seizures and time to focus (time to get back to normal). Before I was on keppra the seizures I have now were minutes in length and the time to focus was 15-45 minutes. Now those same seizures are 2-5 secomds and focus time is a few seconds too. I can be on a phne call and people on the other ned of the line know nothing about me having a seizure while I was talking to them. He has just started taking the keppra so after a certain period of time he has another appointment in which he will have to talk to his neurologist and tell him if there is anything different if he had any seizures and a few other things. Dosages may be increased or decreased at that time
