What worked after Lamictal?

Fri, 04/28/2017 - 21:39
Hello, friends!! I started struggling with at least 5 times daily complex partials about 6 months ago and was started on Lamictal in March (can't quite remember the dosage because it's been a while and I think we all know how anti seizure medication does away with memory) and was doing fabulous! Unfortunately, I started with a nasty rash on my arms that spread into my mouth and Lamictal was no more in my daily regimen, boo. I was then switched to 200mg Topamax and although I've tried to give this the benefit of the doubt and wait it out, it does absolutely nothing to help my epilepsy :( I guess I'm just curious, is there anyone who succeeded with Lamictal but had to get switched to something else that worked just as well -- if so what was it? Thanks a bunch!!!

Well I used lamictal  and it

Well I used lamictal  and it did reduce my seizures. You had a side effect  to it which is why they switched you. I had my problem with Dilantin which was one of the best medications I had used. But after taking it for 30 years I got toxic on it. So my switch wasn't gradual it was done without weaning. I had to stay near the hospital for awhile. But yes people do have to switch to other medications. They all work. It is finding the medication that works and the right dosage that controls your seizures. That is the golden point. At times it is like finding a needle in a hay stack but it can be found. I will never be completely seizure free. But by working and constantly asking Doc questions my seizures have been reduced to a seizure every 8-14 days and at times months. The time in those seizures is now a few seconds. I can have them right in front of you and you wouldn't know I had it.There are about 60 different medications that control seizures. I have only been on about 20-27 different medications or combinations of medications. They all worked. I wanted better control and the time in them reduced. I did have to give them time to build in my body. Then give it a couple of months to verify that it is reducing the number of seizures and time in them.

Tried lamictal/lamotrigine

Tried lamictal/lamotrigine for about a year increasing dosages since it wasn't effective. Even nearing the maximum dosage wasn't effective for controlling my seizures but I never got the rash. My Dr wanted to keep me on the max dosage (not controlling seizures at all but experiencing some side effects) and add a 2nd anti-epileptic Rx. I refused to add a new RX to the one not working and said I was willing to try something else but not without quiting lamotrigine Rx since it had zero effect on my seizures. (If it reduced my seizure frequency or severity at all I would  have kept taking it as suggested) I'm now on Zimpat which seems better side effect wise but it has only been 4 weeks. I have been seizure free so far but my seizure events typically occur 1 month (recently) to 3 months (previously) apart so not sure it is effective yet? Dull headache is what I notice most and also some slower memory/thought from the Zimpat. So far it is better than Dilantin, depakote, keppra, or lamotrigine -at least for me but can't say how effective it is yet. Good luck. It is most definitely like finding a needle in a haystack... And there are many haystacks to look through and we never stop looking.

Hi, I just found this forum

Hi, I just found this forum and was going to discuss thisexact issue!  I have been on (Lamictal150mg x2) for about eight years, with no real side-effects.  I suffer with simple/complex partial seizureswhich have been under control for the last year, but have had 3 seizures in thelast month.  I have been experiencing increasedstress at home recently, which could be affecting it.  I just had an appointment with my Neurologist, who suggested (as I cannot handle higher doses of Lamictal) one of three drugs:Topiromate, Lacosamide or Zonisamade.  Ialso suffer with migraines and two of these drugs are also used (off-label) totreat migraines. I hate the prospect of changing drugs.  When I was diagnosed nine years ago I was puton Tegretol (Carbamazepine), theside effects of which were horrific and turned me into a zombie for months, beforeit was suggested I try another drug. Lamictal was like a light switch. I am just worried that changing to another drug could go either way...
