Weird smell after stopping epilepsy medication

Mon, 05/25/2015 - 05:18

Doctors prescribed me 'levetiracetam' as a precaution after an episode where I lost consciousness and had a brain injury. I took the medication for nearly 5 months. Series of tests were done (CT, MR-I, MR-O, MR-V, EEG,etc) and everything was normal. . Its been about 6 weeks since I am off medication.

Over the last month, I had been complaining of weird smell in the home/car etc. that nobody else seem to feel. It became clear to me after a while that it was me. I can often smell something pungent or metallic and smell that even more when I breathe deeply. It does not bother me other than the fear that something is not right. Google search threw out some material related to olfactory hallunications. My neurologist told me not to worry for now (since a normal EEG was pretty recent) but to be cautious. She felt that this would go away in time. I play golf twice a week and work six days a week. So I am generally healthy. I do smoke about 10 cigarettes a day.

I was wondering if this 'smell' is a side effect of the epilepsy medication that I took for nearly 5 months. I sincerely appreciate any thoughts on this situation. Thank you.

The software does not

The software does not correctly list comment counts so you posted before and got responses even though it says there aren't comments. The smell is not a side effect and you could be having simple partials even with a clear EEG.
