vimpat and keppra have they helped ?

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 02:20
I was diagnosed with epilepsy in Apr 2014 @ the age of 32 never had a seizure before and didn't even know what was happening. I have had three MRI all good ONE CT scan came back good. Only showed a little abnormal activity on one eeg now they can't find anything. I have been told that they need to put the EEG electrodes on the inside of my brain to actually find out where they are coming from. They put me on Keppra 3000 mg a day, and 400 mg of Vimpat a day has anyone else had these perscribed and did they help? I have gained over 70#'s in the last 7 months . Anyone else experienced this much weight gain on eplilesy meds. Help please I'm needing answers!

welcome to the clubIf you had abnormal activity in a EEG then that may bee all that is needed. Really all that is needed to come up with a diagnosis of epilepsy is 2 seizures. The MRI or CTscan are things that basically take pictures for everything in your brain. With those they can see anything that might cause an electrical impulse to go wrong cause the seizure. As for keppra I have been using it for many years. Doc and I added the vimpat 1 1/2 yearas ago. As for weight gain there are several medications that can cause weight gain. I was taking one that made you retain water. Yup that one wasn't fun. As for how keppra and vimpat work together they are both made by the same company. I had been in drug studies and my seizures were down to 2-4 a week. Doc and I knew I was on teh highest dosage they want anyone to take for keppra which is why he wanted to add the vimpat. That said with the addition of vimpat I now have fewer seizures1 every 8-14 days. Which I am not worried about since the keppra already reduced the number of seizures I had been having. Keppra also shortened the time on my seizures. A partial seizure that used to be 3-8 mnutes is now only 5-8 seconds. The focus time (time to get back to normal) used to be 15-45 minutes is now 5-8 seconds. People knew there was something wrong before. I can now have a seizure while in a group of people and most people would know nothing about me having the seizure. I have had them while on the phone talking to people. Keppra is becomming the go to medication. Oh and the generic works too. I was the test patient when the generic came out and doc needed to know if it worked just like name brand. well I used the test study diary and turned it ion after a month. SO generic keppra does work and bby me doing the test he now has patients that did not have the funds available to get keppra but they are taking the generic. I hope this helps and you get seizure free. Joe Oh and the weight gain could have been from one of the other meds you were taking. I gained about 60 lbs and lost 35 once taken off that medication. I have lost some more but it does take time to lose since I am one of one who has been arround since the stone age. Yup I love the ribs I used to gewt back them. It did take longer to cook them but man were they good
