Trileptal and Dilantin

Hello,
I had to ask if anyone was taking both trileptal and dilantin at the same time. I was first put on trileptal after my first seizure in May. My dose was 600mg twice a day. It took a while but I was able to tollerate the medication enough to function. I had another siezure in October and the doctor put me on Dilantin as well. I am taking 300mg of Dilantin every day along with 1200mg a day of trileptal. My biggest problem with the medication is being drowsy at certain periods of the day. I can not stay awake, especially, after I eat lunch for some reason. I also dream more than I ever have. I mean those dreams that seem so real you can not believe they are not real when you wake up. Sometimes I get really depressed, but I am not sure if the medication is causing it. I went from flying a business jet in May to being isolated and not being able to drive. I have a positive outlook, and I am lucky that I have a loving wife with a good job to help me sort everything out. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone was taking this combination of medications and, if so, are they having any problems.

I just could not remember how I could have been this drowsy beforeI started taking the trileptal. I was pretty active before I started to have seizures. Now sinceI have had so many life changes, I could not remember if I was this tired before. I thought it was the medicine, but I was not completely sure. I also have been stuck at home since I can't drive. I am sure this has not helped. I was just making sure I wasn't going crazy.
I commend you for being able to handle a 1500mg a day dose. I tried it for a week and could not hardly function. Thanks for the support.

Hello hartjus, I do not have the experience of taking both Trileptal and Dilantin but I was so moved by what you wrote that I had to respond. I am taking 1500 mg of Trileptal a day (along with a couple of other medications). I get so drowsy on this medication (even the Trileptal alone, which is what I first started on) that if I sit down for 3-5 minutes I fall asleep~very embarrassing especially when I'm sitting in public! Anyway, I hear you when you say that you get depressed. Hang in there and I will too. I also have a loving and supportive person in my life: My partner (Boyfriend). Thank heavens for this! skyblue
