Tegratol Withdrawl.

Fri, 07/29/2016 - 09:55
Hi there I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and can help me. this is a long story I will try to keep it as simple as possible I was fit free since I was 15 years of age. My epilepsy is caused by mild sturgent webber syndrome with a birthmark to the left side of my forehead. I was put on tegratol at the age of 15 thst seemed to work. However 2 years ago I had to have an operation to remove stones in my bile duct. 2 weeks later I started having fits again where I get cramp down one side of my body and weakness followed by kerning on the right side. I was then put on a drug called sodium valporate or epilum. I was still on the tegratol at this time but I got side effects of the valporate where I had cramp in my body sweating anxiety and heat in chest. However after 6 months this eventually went And I was told by neurologist I needed to be withdrawn from the tegratol in October last year. So I started doing this slowly I was only on 400 mg a day 200 mornings and nights. As I finslly got off this drug I have had nothing but horrible side effects. I will explain the process. First off I get a dull pick in my index and middle finger of right hand that seems to be the trigger to this drug reaction. I start by gerring dizzy as if im fAllington over. I get a weakness in my right hand thst slowly get weaker and goes up my arm. Then it gets weaker in my leg. This is followed by cramp that goes first to my leg for about 5 ninutes. It then moves to my hand and shoulder then finally my right eye and throat that causes speeh loss for a minute. Sometimes I get a thumping sensation behind my eye that lasts a few minutes and my finger tips. I get hot then cold. After a bit the thumping cramp etc slowly goes and finslly after an hour I'm back to normsl. I feel a bit groggy after this but I always pull through then the next day I'm back to normsl as if nothing happened and feel fit and healthy. I'm like this for between a week and 12 days then I start to feel lethargic sick and generally feel gradually worse for a few days as if there is a build up of something in my body waiting for the reaction to happen. My neurologist has said people gets these side effects just I'm unfortunately very sensitive to medication change. I'm now nearly 28 so I went off at nearly 27 with the tegratol almost 12 years. The drug reactions have got slightly better over time and sometimes the distance between events is longer but I don't feel this is normsl for my body to react in such a way to be off drugs. I seem to have gotten all the side effects and during the reaction they all come together and hit me at their worst. I am going to try and see my neurologist again. I know it's no good going back on the drug as it was doing me no good and the valporate has done it's Jon as I'm over a year seizure free. Any advice or anything similar happened to anyone else ? I appreciate any help in advance Thanks John
