scared of lamotrigine

Thu, 05/25/2017 - 10:00
Hi am new to this site. Am due to start on Lamotrigine 25mg titration to 100mg. Feel somewhat 'at sea' as given hardly any info by professionals, all info I know is off excellent sites like this. I just feel I need to be monitored closely when starting this drug as have depression (quite severe at times) and am chaotic (so can easily miss a dose). I am lucky as only have (so far, 'touch wood') atypical absence ('frozen'/conscious)-frequently and 'floppy' type occasionally. Basically can anyone tell me if a dose is missed does that mean I could have an even worse seizure/s and does the drug make one lose clarity? SAm just worried I am going to have more problems than it solves, although have a limited quality of life at present which is quite frustrating. Thank you.

100mg might not be enough,

100mg might not be enough, that would be a very low dosage. our 10yo takes 225mg/day. controls her atypical absence and myoclonics just fine. they did a follow up eeg to test that. lamotrigine is less problematic when increasing or decreasing slowly. does not cause cognitive issues for her nor are cognitive issues generally associated with it.

the dosage you will be on is

the dosage you will be on is a low dosage. By starting low the neurologists can stop raising the dosage easier then decreasing the dosage. It takes time for your body to get used to the medication. once on the dosage for about 3 weeks the therapeutic levels have been set for that dosage. Those therapeutic levels are there to stop break through seizures from happening if a dosage is taken late or missed.Amy Jo has answers to your other questions
