proper and safe way to withdraw from Keppra

Mon, 03/07/2016 - 13:37
Does this sound like a good schedule? I have been on keppra 6 months (500mg AM and 500mg PM). I had one seizure 6 months ago and never had another one. Now, who knows why I have not had another seizure. Could be keppra or could be just my body has healed. In any regard I want to stop taking it as it is very bad drug to take on the long run as I read. Does this schedule sounds safe and proper? 500mg AM 250mg PM (for 4 weeks) 250mg AM 250mg PM (for 4 weeks) 250mg AM 125mg PM (for 4 weeks) 125mg AM 125mg PM (for 4 weeks) 125mg AM stop PM (for 4 weeks) Thanks you very much, LUka

So you want someone to tell

So you want someone to tell you if your scheduled looks ok to wean you off keppra. Foe one thing you do not know if it is the medication that stopped the seizures or just happen stance. You do not know what a seizure is or how they start but you don't want to take meds. I know people do not like taking medications. I also know medications are created to help people with ailments. Be it epilepsy, a heart ailment or diabetes or any other ailment. without a doctor telling you how to wean yourself off a medication for seizure control you may cause more damage and stress then you can think about. You had one seizure you know about. Have you looked at all the other seizures you could have been having and not known about?I know about having seizures that people and I didn't know about.. I had been written up for daydreaming in class for about 2 years before ever having the grand mal seizure I had. Petite mal or todays absence seizures look like the person in them is daydreaming. I was also having focal seizures today absence or simple partial seizures.  I had a weird feeling in my right hand or it would twitch now and then.. So yes I know that people can have seizures they know nothing about and you could have had them without knowing it.As for getting off medications without a doctor knowing it. I know about that too. I had gone over 6 months without a seizure and I stopped taking my medications. Things went well for 6-8 weeks. I visited Mom after college one night. the next thing I knew is I came to in a hospital 3 days later. There is a thing called status epilepticus which does happen. With me I was having 40 convulsive seizures an hour. They started about 10pm on monday. I was told the doctors had gotten me out of status and called Mom to come get me. Before she got back I went into it again. Like I said I came to 3 days later.. The head of the hospital was teh neurologist that was over my case told me that they had done everything they could do and split a hair a thousand times and thats how close to seeing Gods face I was. He stated they had given up on me but my Mother hadn't she had been there praying all the time. So I can say that id it weren't for a mothers prayer I wouldn't be here answering peoples questions. If your doctor works with you fine he will tell you to amount to take and when to lower the dosages. Unless you have the neurologist knowing you are stopping your meds I sure wouldn't do it because it can and has killed some people.
