New Trileptal Dosage Wheres my boy gone

Thu, 11/10/2016 - 20:03
Hi Everbody i am a parent whom is struggling to get to grips once again with epilepsy,My son was diagnosed 4 years ago and after a harrowing time finding a solution he was prescribed Trieptal 4.5ml twice daily. He went seizure free for 3 years and when he was 13 missed quite a few doses of the medicine. This resulted in what we thought was a recurrance of the seizures. After consulation with his Physcian the dose was doubled to 9ml twice daily. Over the time of his history with epilepsy on his 4,5ml dose we have found that he was absent minded and forgetful of everyday thing,we found this frustrating but manageable. Since the introduction of the 9ml dose my son is a different boy,he has become depressed and has no interest in anything his school work has suffered, his sport, everything he does, we feel he is depressed. My question today is What is the effect of such an increased dosage and its potential to cause this type of lethargy and the apparent depression of my once very active teenager,he seems to be suffering depression,Can this behaviour be attributed to the increased dosage of his medication, thank you in advance for your valuble contributions to this post.

It is a combination of the dosage and any changes in his body from the first dosage he wa  taking. I'll put it this way. My dosages were changed 4 times in 9=12 months when I was changing from 12 to 14. Hormonal changes. a weight change can affect the dosage enough to cause a seizure. seizures can change. Why they doubled the dosage is what I question. Generally every time they changed my dosages it was a gradual increase so they could see the decrease the number of seizures and decrease in the side effects of both eh seizures and medication. For me those increased were done because of my seizures. I always had a problem with drowsiness since I have always needed the max amounts of medications.

Hello Amy Jo thank you for your reply. He was taking the medicine up to a point where he began to miss doses, his original dose was 3.75ml not the 4.5ml stated earlier. He became lazy and began to miss doses, and at this stage there was a recurrence of the seizures which was so disappointing as he was seizure free for 3 years, but due to his poor attitude in taking his medicine the seizures returned. At this stage we brought him to our local hospital and they contacted the central childrens hospital here in Ireland and his consultant increased the dosage from 3.75ml to 9ml.Now after a few months we have a boy who has no interest in anything and that goes double for anything school related, he also has suffered anxiety and depression, even to the stage of extremes fear of death i have had my 14 year old boy to a counselor many times now over the last year. Can this medicine dose be a reason for this behavior.I have contacted the hospital and i am awaiting word if i can change his dosage. Many thanks for your replyGraham
