New to AED's w/Question

I am trying the second AED for my nocturnal seizures. The first was Keppra and, now, Tegretol. Both have done the same thing and I wanted to know if this is a normal response.
Is it normal to begin at a low dose, adjust within ~10 days, increase, adjust within ~5 days, increase and, just when reaching a "therapeutic" level, have a worsening of symptoms? Since my seizures are nocturnal, what happened is, as soon as I hit 400 mg, I started waking up more often and more violently than I did before taking the meds.
