Hi Maria, I hope you are feeling well. I would urge you to talk to your doctor immediately, and discuss the specific risks & benefits of taking carbamazepine during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, it is very important that you see your OB/GYN as quickly as possible, and ensure that they coordinate your care with your neuro. Shifting hormone levels may require changes in your medication amounts, or your medication type. Please take care, and keep us posted. ((( hugs ))) Barbie

I was on Tegretol(Carbamazepine) through two pregnancies. I was high risk both times and had to do extra tests and a level 2 ultrasound to look for side effects on the baby. I also spoke to a genetic councelor. It was stressful but both babies were perfectly healthy. The only thing was that they were both small. But being that they were both healthy, I was happy. Make sure that you get your levels taken regularly though. I didn't do that the first time and ended up with pre-eclampsia including seizures. They didn't know for sure if it was because of my epilepsy or not but I wouldn't take the chance.

Maria, I was on it for 23 some years. Had four children with it. This was back 22 years ago. I also took phenobarbital with it. And back then they didnt know you should take folic acid. So make sure you take that. I have two children with learning disabilities. One worse than the other. One is very successful and owns his own business. The other still in school, but works hard at his job. And will also do fine out in the working world Just take your mulitvitamin and folic acid too. best of luck Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach/
