Lamictal & Emotional Side Effects

Fri, 05/19/2017 - 14:01
Hi everyone, I take 300mg of Lamictal daily (2x 150mg). Since Lamictal is also used for bipolar disorder, I was just curious if anyone who is not bipolar has any effects in that respect? Is it too small of a dose to notice? I feel like I really don't get caught up on troubling emotion much anymore and I'm wondering if the medicine is influencing that at all. I looked for forum posts on the subject but did not see any with people who are not bipolar--sorry if I am reposting!

WelcomeLamictal in an anticonvulsant used to treat people with seizures. Now you have to have researched the medication and are curious since it is also used by people with bipolar disorders too. It is also used to treat migraines and several other ailments. Do you research all the different medications you take? Aspirin is used for head aches. But a smaller dosage is good for somebody with a heart issue.Just because the medication was created to treat one thing does not mean it can not or will not treat something else. As for dosages??? Leave that to the neurologist or doctor prescribing the medication. A medication and dosage that works for one person may not work for the next. Someone may need a very low dosage of lamictal to control their seizures. For me I was taking the highest dosage they allowed. It didn't stop all my seizures but it did help some. I have always required the highest dosage a doctor would prescribe.

our child had increased anxiety before her seizures and while lamotrigine is a mood stabilizer, I think improvement for anxiety stemmed from the effect on epilepsy. dosing for mood disorders is below amounts used for treating epilepsy.

I have been taking Lamictal

I have been taking Lamictal for over a decade. When I started on it, seizures were the primary treatment. Now, they are secondary and bi-polar is the first. I suffer through hideous depression on some others, so as a result, my options are limited. Up until now (I have very recently added a second - Keppra), Lamictal has been my saving grace. I have never had a moment of depression or anxiety, so I would imagine your daughter is feeling the benefit. Hope that's it, and it keeps working well for her. :-)
