JME medications and prognoses

Wed, 08/17/2005 - 07:27

My son is 15 years old and has had JME for two years. He has been on 1500 mg of Keppra and 500mg of Depakote for the last 6 months and we have finally controlled his grand mals with this combination. We have tried Dilantin only and Depakote only with no luck. He has now contracted something called Gastroparesis which is a problem where the stomach does not force food to naturally move into the intestines. He has to take other meds for that. I have been told JME cannot be cured and he will have to be on meds for the rest of his life. Research seems to confirm this but I was wondering if anyone with JME has been given any hope of recovery. Also anyone else ever contract Gastroparesis? My Neuro says it has nothing to do with JME but I am not sure. What meds have others with JME found to be effective? I want to be ready if this latest combination fails. Finally my son used to be very athletic before JME. Now he gets terrible stomach pains during strenuous exercise and he has lost a lot of weight since being on Keppra. Anyone with similar symptoms?

Many thanks from Philadelphia,

Tom
