Increase Keppra or Tegretol dosage?

Wed, 03/22/2017 - 12:44
Hello, I'm taking 2x1000mg Keppra and 2x 400mg Tegretol daily. I'm having small seizures on this dosage, mostly at morning, at stressful situations or high phisical workload. I can't get to my doctor for a month so I will increase dosage but don't know which to increase first and for how much. Should I start with + 2x500mg Keppra or 2x200mg Tegretol...? Thank you for advice. klemen

Never increase or decrease the dosage of a medicine without doctor's advice or approval.  I understand you cannot get in to see him for another month, but dosing changes usually do not require a visit and can be taken care of over the phone or by email.

I agree with you, but i'm

I agree with you, but i'm unable to contact him over phone or mail. I'm sure his answer will be to increase dosage, just don't know which.

You shouldn't be changing

You shouldn't be changing your dosage. Medications changes and dosage changes can be done in a phone call with a visit a month or two later to verify that the changes or adjustments are working. I have done it many times and yes a visit within 3 months to make sure it is working. Understand that the medications are not like aspirin where once taken it goes away after a few hours. It will take about 1-2 weeks for the therapeutic levels to build in your body which is why a 2-3 month period of time. One month for the levels to get where the neurologists want them the next month to verify it is working and controlling your seizures better. If it stopped some seizures but not all then another adjustment can be made then. Gradual adjustments is far better then over giving more medication then needed.
