I Need An Answer About Depakene

Thu, 01/04/2007 - 10:45
Hi, I took Depakene probably 8-10 years ago, but I don't remember how the doctor increased and decreased it, so I need to hear from someone who's taking it now. My husband's grandfather is having a whole host of medical problems right now. It started with a urinary tract infection that went unchecked for years. The doctors in the podunk town he lives in didn't give him the time and care he needed when he finally did go to get checked, so he was misdiagnosed for several months. The misdiagnosis and wrong treatment created more problems, landed him in the hospital, and he ended up needing surgery. He had complications from the surgery and only got worse. While in the hospital, he developed a heart arythmia and had a couple of seizures. Not sure what kind they were, but I know they weren't grand mals or myoclonic seizures. Anyhow, he's been out of the hospital for a while now but is on heart medication, oxygen, and Depakene. He needs the oxygen because one of the side effects of the heart med is fluid around the heart and in the lungs, so he's having trouble getting the oxygen he needs. He always feels like he suffocating. My husband's uncle and his wife are the ones caring for him, as they are the only ones who live in the same state. We found out last night that his aunt and uncle decided the doctors had Grandpa on too much Depakene, so they cut his dosage in half on their own. The did it in one day. Unfortunately, he started to have seizures, and who knows if they saw the connection. I don't know how much he was taking, but I know how dangerous it is to cut seizure meds in half overnight. With my Lamictal, I have to increase/decrease by 25mg a week. I don't remember what it was with the Depakene. Can anyone tell me what it is for you? My in-laws drove up to see Grandpa yesterday, so I plan to give them a call, so they can let them know just how dangerous what they're doing to him is.

Carrie, I'm on Depakote and when I my dosage has been reduced, it has been reduced by one pill a month. And that's been only when they have had to increase it to a dosage for awhile that is above maximum. Their reducing his meds like that, especially on their own without his physicians approval or knowledge is playing with fire. Especially with one so ill. Beyond me. My advice to you and hubby is to contact his physician and make sure he/she is aware of what is going on. It could be the other meds not agreeing with the depakene which wouldn't be surprising. But there are times we have to take necessary meds that do interfere with our seizure meds. My heart goes out to you. I know this has to be a stressful situation for you and your hubby worrying about his grandfather and also how his meds are being done. My thoughts are with you! Take care! -Spiz
