how to approach PCP about medicinal marijuana?

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 20:25
The question is exactly what the title reads. I'm on keppra 500 2x a day for my epilepsy, am still waiting on an updated consult from neuro (my PCP has my records and positive eeg from 2007 with epilepsy diagnosis confirmed with the military). I have an appointment with her tomorrow regarding my sleep paralysis and seizures. I want to approach her about medicinal use of marijuana but am nervous. I discovered as a teenager before being formally diagnosed as epileptic, that smoking just once a day worked miracles with my nightly episodes. My sleep paralysis and nocturnal seizures had completely stopped..and once I quit smoking, it all returned. I live in Massachusetts where medicinal marijuana is legal for use. Are there any tips anyone has about how to approach the subject? I want to consult my PCP first even though there are specialists I can see on my own. I'm just afraid of looking like a drug seeker given that this is a new PCP..

Well to start with the dosage

Well to start with the dosage you are on is low. I take 3-750 mg 2 times a daywhich equates to 2250mg morning and night. The first person you should be checking with is your neurologist since he probably knows more about the use with people with epilepsy. If your dosage hasn't been increased recently that would be the thing to start with.  I can say that keppra is the best medication I have ever used for seizure control. If it were me I would call Doc and discuss the possiability of raising the dosage to see if I could get better control. Especially if keppra has reduced th number of seizures you were having. Also he knows about the MMJ studies that have been done with people with epilepsy. I hope this helps Joe
