Has anyone been thru a med transition from successful med to ??

Sun, 06/25/2006 - 15:17
I am going thru a med transition from Mephenytoin (very successful but was stopped by the Drug Companies-Novartis- after on the Market for 50 years) to Topomax. I am now taking 200 Topomax, plus my Mephenytoin (I still have some left) and the Dr.wants to increase Topomax and decrease Mephenetoin so I will be on Topomax 100%. I feel good now. At first when took Topomax, had swelling of hands, numbness, etc. but it seems to have gone away. I have been so well for so long that this transition scares me but there is no meds out there equal to Mephenytoin so have to rely on these new meds. What do you think? Would like input. Rose

Roses The more recent drugs will not cause you as many side effects. There was a drug that they took off the market many years ago that I had to find a new one to replace it. It can be hard especially when it is working for you. But I hope topamax works for you. take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

I was switched from Phenobarb to Topamax because the only phenobarb I could take was a certain brand name which they quit making. I was gradually switched over like you are and I went about six months then had a seizure. I was really disapointed because on the phenobarb I had went like 10 or 12 years without one. It does not seem fair when the medicine works that the drug companies can quit making the drugs. People have to have them. Mary
