dilantin vs topamax, changing between them

Tue, 10/24/2006 - 12:13
is it difficult to go to topamax after taking dilantin? i mean im looking at the box with the sample my new neuro gave me and it says its for migraines(of course he prescribed me a higher dosage) but i feel like im going from something strong to something weak? like codeine to tylenol or something lol... but i wanna take it to counteract all the weight that i gained on dilantin, and the fact that dilantin never eliminated my grand mals completely, just reduced them alot. the doc says that this will reduce my partial/aura thingies too, im just nervous about going to it, im afraid that once i go off dilantin it might not work and i will have seizures every night or something... anyone else made the transition between these 2 particular meds?

I have been on both of those meds. I have changed from Phenobarbital to other meds that were not so strong. It is scary and can cause problems. But everyone is different and you just need to take it very slow so the seizures dont occur. I have been on many different meds and Phenobarbital was my hardest to get off. As for dilantin, gave me trouble when put with Pheno. Just take it slow. For you could have very good results. take care and best of luck to you lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

I did the exact same thing you did. I was worried too. But I felt drugged and drunk all of the time on the Dilantin and I knew the long term effects were not all that wonderful. I did make the switch and I have been seizure free for about 18 months. Some really hate Topamax, but don't try to take mine away!!!!
