Dilantin to Keppra switch. Speech issues

Fri, 12/04/2015 - 13:36

Hello, im new to the site.

I had surgery for a cavernous angioma back in 2007, because of the scar tissue the neurosurgeon got me on dilantin.had my seizures controlled, only got them when i gained weight (bodybuilding) and the dilantin levels werent enough for my weight.

In these 9 years i have to say i had less than 10 seizures. My last one was this past novmber. the thing is im pretty fed up with Phenytoin side effects(Low testosterone levels checked with an endocrinologist, memory issues, speech problems among others), and didnt change meds because i wanted to finish med school without the added stress of the risk when you change meds. Now I finally decided to change to keppra, been tapering down the dilantin (used to take 400mg ed, now im on 100mg)  and 2,000 mg of keppra divided into two doses. had to take couple of weeks from work to do the change because of the switch and anxiety it gives me.

1. Since my last seizure (1 month ago) i've been feeling my tongue really heavy and sloppy from time to time. it usually lasts 20 mins to an hour, any one had this problem? is it a withdrawl effect of the dilantin? my neuro told me its my scar tissue "acting up" but that im protected with the medication.

2. Anyone had hormone problems with dilantin? is keppra a good switch?

3. Half life of keppra is 7 hours, how come they say to take it AM/PM? what happens to those hours in the afternoon?

4. Any other bodybuilders with here? i would reaaly like advice about what you are controlling yout epilepsy with.

Thanks
