Dilantin good, need a little something extra...?

Thu, 07/10/2014 - 12:00

I have been taking Dilantin for many years (let's say 20). It has done very well for me, but I still have 2-4 tonic-clonic seizures a year, just enough to prevent me from driving most of the time.

I would like to consider an add-on drug that might fill the gap; preferably cheap/generic with not too many side effects (I know, sounds like a miracle drug...but I do tolerate most things well.)

I have tried changing to others...Keppra, Lamictal, Zonegran....but they had no noticeable effect when my Dilantin was reduced.

Any suggestions?

WelcomeI read your post Miriacle drugs are hard to come by. I would like to consider an add-on drug that might fill the gap;  I have tried changing to others...Keppra, Lamictal, Zonegran....but they had no noticeable effect when my Dilantin was reduced.  but I still have 2-4 tonic-clonic seizures a year, just enough to prevent me from driving most of the time. Discuss this issue with yoour neurologist and see if he can couple your dilantin with another medication to see if the 2 medications can stop your seizures. If you only have 2-4 seizures a year thentry one dosage if you still have a seizure then raise or lower the new medication. Unless your neurologist knows the medication does not work at one dosage or a higher dosage then you may never know. Dosages are like medications they all need adjusting from time to time I hope this helps and you get your seizures under control Joe
