Anxiety or an aura - what do you think?

Tue, 07/11/2006 - 13:11
Here is a copy and paste from my blog: Another odd side effect, well I think its a side effect from the Lamictal, is anxiety. I've never had a problem with this before. 2 times its been a problem, the other times its just annoying. The first time was when I drove alone. I started feeling like I was going to pass out, it happened over and over and over again. I pulled over and tried to calm myself down. I don't know if it was an aura type thing, or a panic attack. Since then I will not drive, every time I get in a car I feel this way. The second time was in Walmart. I was with my mom and she left to get something, so I was alone. I started feeling the dizziness and like I was starting to pass out. I kept panicking worrying that I was going to have a seizure in public. So what is this??? A little background - I was diagnosed in May of 2006 with epilepsy after having 4 seizures in a 7 month period and several abnormal EEGs. I have been taking Lamictal for 3 weeks now. This is all new to me, so any opinion is appreciated. Thanks, Jamie

Hi Jamie Lamictal effects everyone differently, good or bad. I cant really say from this script of yours if it's the lamictal that's making you anxious or causing auras. But in my opinion, from what you are saying here, I believe you are having panick attacks more than anything else here. It is possible you could be triggering auras from your panick attacks but seeing as this is all new to you, and dont like being left alone, obviously you would feel anxious and scared and a bit uptight. It's only been 3 weeks on lamictal so it's early yet to say if it's good for you or not. Some like it, some dont. I used to take it and it didn't agree with me. But that is me. Auras are different for everyone too. You will learn this yourself what your auras are really like to you and will be able to differentiate between an aura and a panick attack in time. I believe you are having panick attacks from what you are describing here, but I am not a doctor either. it's good that you decided to not drive in the mean time so to be safe to yourself and to others whether it's auras or panick attacks. I suggest you speak to the doctor and he/she might be able to help in this regard. I hope things do get better for you. It is scary when you are new to it but overtime you will not be so scared anymore and will be able to deal with it better with help of friends and family anround you :) Keep in touch, Quirky

Jamie- I would tend to agree with quircky that you are having panic attacks..I too am not a docor so i have no medical advice. I can share my experience with you though. I have panic attacks that stem from me being in certain situations and fearing that I MIGHT have seizure. Sometimes I can get so worked up I can bring on an aura. Recently my husband I traveled out of the country for vacation and I was so nervous about having a sz so far from home I didn't think I could even enjoy our vacation. Dctor prescribed Klonpin for my anxiety because it helps with anxiety and also is an anti-seizure med. It was a miracle drug for me I've only had to take it 5 times in the past 5 months- and have had no side effects from it. Oh, and I am on Lamictal now also. I had these panic attacks long before taking Lamictal.I used to take Dilantin. i'm guessing you are like me and your anxiety is from dealing with your seizures not your meds. Again, don't take my advice but ask your dr. Good Luck and God bless. Sandy

Hi Jamie, Yep, sounds like panic attacks. Thank goodness I haven't had one in many years, but I don't think that I'll ever forget that experience! What's funny is that my seizures weren't recognized, diagnosed, or treated until after I gained some control over my panic attacks. I wasn't on any meds, and saw a therapist for a few years. In retrospect, I can see that I would have a seizure, which brought on panic attacks, then back to seizure. Back and forth, day after day for a long time. My hubby taught me to tell myself, "shut up, stop it" as I felt that panic dooming. His thought was to get me to stop my panic by being strong with myself. That became my thing from that moment on. I was having complex partials, beginning as that feeling of panic, and I would immediately say, "oh my God! shut up, stop it!". Many years later, I still say those words when a complex partial is beginning. I know that some meds do have anxiety as an effect, but if your anxiety is that strong, I'd definitely recommend switching meds. You don't want to get caught in that cycle of panic --> seizure --> panic. It is absolute hell! I wish you the very best of luck. (((hugs))) Heather :)
