Need some advice

Hi! My daughter Shelbie has had a few seizures since Aug. Her last one was 2 weeks ago. Before she had this seizure she was playing her gameboy in the dark. We are not sure if that is what caused the seizure or not. She has been playing her gameboy since than, but it is only with the lights on. So far no seizures. She would like more games for christmas, but my husband is worried that her seizure was caused by the gameboy. I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced something like this, and what do you think about buying gameboy games? Thanks! Mindy Mooresville, IN

Hi, It sounds like your daughter is pre-disposed to have certain seizures. Does she ever get seizures at any other time? Has she seen a neurologist and had an EEG done? Light induced seizures can happen when someone has epilepsy. They are extremely rare for someone who is not pre-disposed to having seizures

She has had an EEG and a video EEG is scheduled for 12/26. She is on topamax. That seems to be working. I didn't know if there was anyone else out there that has experienced something like this after being diagnosis. Thanks for your email.

Hi Mindy! I was reading your comment with interest. My daughter has had tonic-clonic seizures for just over 2 years now. One of her seizures was at night in bed, we had sent both Zoe and her brother to bed for the night and I had just got into bed, thinking the two of them were asleep. Next thing we heard was my son screaming out that Zoe was having a seizure. She was having a fairly "bad" one when we raced to her room. The lights were out and when my husband switched the light on I noticed her mobile phone on and at the foot end of her bed on the floor. After, when we asked our son what had happened, he said that Zoe had her light off and in the blackness of her room she had her mobile on and was sending an sms message to a friend of hers. When my son called out for her to turn it off because the light from the mobile was annoying him and he couldn't sleep (his bedroom is across the hall from hers and they both sleep with their doors open) he said Zoe didn't respond. Next thing he saw was the light from her mobile phone look like someone had thrown it across the room. Then he heard Zoe go into a seizure. We banned her from using the mobile till we found out more. The interesting thing is Zoe isn't photo sensitive ( she has had 2 EEG's done with a neg on flashing lights etc). ALSO she has had 3 seizres in front of the computer. She was on the computer each time just chatting to friends or doing her homework, and she just went into a seizure each time. We also got her off the computer and restrict her time on there now. Zoe sees a naturopath who said that computers, mobile phones, x-box games, gameboys and playstations and the such can cause some people to have seizures. The naturopath said (and I know this may sound weird) that too much of the "flashing electronic" lights that computers and computer type games etc produce, triggers activity in the brain and so may cause some people seizures. I know that the x-box games and some others have a warning that the game may cause seizures in people and to be aware of that. Keeping Zoe off the computer and other things like that helped a bit. She doesn't want to use her mobile phone now and only uses mine if she has to. I mean it makes sense, a seizure IS a abnormal discharge of electrochemical activity in the brain! I hope this helps! All the best! Sandy
