Is my two year old having seizures?

Mon, 01/18/2010 - 13:02
My 7 week old son was recently diagnosed with seizures. Even before he was born I took my son to have an EEG done after a few episodes he had that I thought were strange. He would be playing or doing something and all of a sudden he would start crying like he was scared and he couldn't walk. He would just fall in the floor like he lost the use of his legs. It was like one leg would give out. He would try to get up off the floor and wouldn't be able to. This lasted for only a few seconds each time it happenend but it has now happened 4 times in the last four months. His EEG was normal but today he had another episode and It has me worried again that he too could be having a seizure. Does this sound like a seizure or something else? Like I said, he doesn't jerk, doesn't shake, or anything. Just loses use of leg, cries, and then gets back up and is fine.

An EEG is not sufficient in many cases. You should request an MRI or at least a CAT scan. In my daughter's case, an EEG showed nothing, but an MRI showed a brain tumour (which has now been successfully removed). However, this could also be a myotonia, causing the involuntary loss of muscular control in his legs. Google it and perhaps ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist to check. Jeff
