Fetal Valproate/Anticonvulsant Syndrome Bladder Problems

Wed, 04/27/2011 - 14:09

Hi

My daughter is 12 and was diagnosised with Fetal Valproate/Tegretal Syndrome. She also has Autism, developmental delays, and tourette syndrome.  Up to this point in time she hasn't had problems holding here urine. However, this summer she started having problems having accidents during the daytime. If she coughs, sneezes, or laughs she sometimes has accidents.

She also has had accidents just sitting down and says she doesn't know she has to go to the bathroom until it gushes. When it happens it completely goes through her jeans all the way down. This happens about every other day. Last time she went she didn't void all the way and ended up going again to a lesser extent. Many times it happens in the later afternoon or evening. She also is sitting down. At times she is able to make it to the bathroom when she runs after she is sitting down.

The symptoms went away this fall but have come back again for the last month. Last time she didn't have a bladder infection and the doctor is mystified. We are going back today to a different one. Has anyone heard of a problem related to the bladder or the muscles that could cause this problem related to this type of syndrome? I am going to ask for a bladder ultrasound. Her older brother has also been diagnosised with this syndrome and he has had a hyperspadius. When they did an ultrasound it showed that there may be an obstruction causing voiding all the way.
