Child with Reflex Epilepsy- high frequency of seizures

Sat, 04/21/2007 - 20:29
i am writing to see if there is anyone out there dealing with reflex epilepsy. Our five year old daughter was diagnosed over a year ago. She seems to be particularly sensitive to natural light. She began nodding her head frequently and we thought it was a tic. Eeg showed tons of spikes. We started with depakote and have tried tegratol, zarontin, lamictil and are thinking about starting Keppra soon. The medications decrease the frequency of the seizures but do not eliminate them. After a while on a certain level of a medication, the effectiveness seems to plateau and we see more seizures. We have also noticed the high frequency of seizures has an effect on her attention. She often seems to find it difficult to concentrate for long periods of time. The medications, we believe, have significantly slowed her ability to process. However, it is difficult to say whether it's the seizures or meds that are having this effect. We understand that reflex epilepsy is very rare. Our doctors have not been able to say that they have seen a case like our daughter's We would love to hear from anyone who might have this particular form of epilepsy or from people dealing with the reality that no medication may work for their child.
